Introducing Marilyn Roxie (From Rave and Roll Blog)

MissP is one of the regular visitors to Teatro Triste de Clown where I am a regular contributor. I often visit her 80's Music Site, Rave and Roll Blog where she occasionally posts about today's undiscovered musical talent.

Not too long ago, she posted a fantastic introduction to an up and coming young Electronica star in her article:
80’s (and sometimes 00’s) Music Rules ~ Introducing Marilyn Roxie.

After reading Miss Parker's glowing review, I downloaded Ms. Roxie's self released album, 2009's
New Limerent Object, which is/was being distributed as a free download.

Once I started listening to it, I was amazed by the proverbial outside of the box creativity that greeted me. From the ethereal to the surreal, it is an eclectic mix of
electronica ear candy.

Notable tracks:
  • Drift Along/Distortion takes us on a ride as we drift through a surreal musicscape.
  • And There I Was has a silk road flavouring to it.
  • Indigo has a great depth in its simplicity and could be the electronica of parlour music.
  • Out in the Moonlight emits a fantastic Middle Eastern sound.
You can download your copy of this album free at Ms. Roxie's Official Website.

If you want a hear something first, below is the just released video for Indigo.

Free Listen to The Year's Most Mysterious Album

I received the following alert on NPR's Facebook feed:
NPR is now streaming Dark Night of the Soul, a musical collaboration between Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and David Lynch, featuring cameos by the Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black and Vic Chesnutt, among others.

This is an interesting collaboration piece and somewhat of a departure for both bands leading one to believe that the guest vocalists helped steer and/or influence some of the musical direction.

According to TFA:
It turns out Dark Night Of The Soul is an album and the songs were written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, though the myriad singers featured on each track also had a big hand in composing and producing the work. The album was initially going to be packaged with a book of photos taken by David Lynch. But now there's word that the music may never be officially released at all.

An unnamed spokesperson for Danger Mouse says that "due to an ongoing dispute with EMI" the book of photographs will "now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'"

For that reason alone, one should give a listen.

Metal Mania Latest Victim in MTV's Metal Hatefest

At 11 AM this morning, I tuned into Metal Mania on VH1 Classic. It's the best source for Classic Metal videos. I actually I should say it was.

To my shock and horror, the lead off song was "Something About You" by Level 42. That's not Metal!! It's one of the worst pop songs that the 80s ever produced.

"Okay," I thought. "Someone goofed and the next song will be something kicking like AC/DC or Twisted Sister"

Wrong! It was "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang. Sure, it's a great song, but I want to Watch METAL videos that's why I tuned into Metal Mania in the first place!!

Now I have to complain.

I surfed to VH1 Classics and regular VH1 websites and they don't have any links or means to contact them. Imagine that. They don't want to hear from us. Just like their Parent Company, MTV, they want to dictate what we watch and when we will watch even if they have to be misleading.

MTV has a long history in campaigning against all things Metal dating back to 1988. This latest stunt has cemented my resolve to boycott and harass this company.

I will not stay up to 4 AM trying to find what time slot Headbanger's Ball on MTV2 is on this Saturday night. No great loss, they usually only play videos from a small subgenre niche on a show that's 15% BS and 75% commercials. A third of them for albums by Hip-hop and Rap Stars in an attempt to alienate their audience.

Besides YouTube or Google video clips, the last true refuge for Metal Videos is MetalVideo.com. That's where I am off to after I click "Publish" on this post.

Razorblade Fairytales by Hate in the Box

This review originally appeared in Memo Juez's LiveJournal (RIP). It can still be found at Razorblade Fairytales

I first heard of Hate in the Box, an up and coming NYC area band, from a concert flyer posted at girlsinbands by cyanidebonbon.

A few mouse clicks later and I am listening to the infectous vocals of Rainbow Blight on a couple of full length Ogg Vorbis downloadable files. I was so impressed I ordered this CD right then and there.

RazorBlade Fairy Tales' first cut, Porcelain, opens with a dark keyboard/synth intro by Optimus Crime shortly joined by an overdriven rhythm guitar. Rainbow Blight soon starts in with When you cry it makes a sound, --like knives on Porcelain in a voice and inflection that makes the listener ask "Is that Gwen Stefani?" Any confusion is quickly eradicated as Blight's powerful and emotionally charged vocals suck you into a world of razorblades that make the tears of dolls run red.

Through-out the entire album, the musical arrangement is straightforward and uncomplicated with a nod to the heyday of Industrial Metal of the early nineties with a Gothic Metal flavouring. Optimus Crime is extremely adept with his keyboarding and musical layering production skills that give the likes of Jason Slater (Snake River Conspiracy) a run for his money.

Crime's hooks have meat hanging from them.

If you are tired of the same old radio friendly garbage pumped daily into your life, then RazorBlade Fairy Tales is a refreshing jaunt out of your watered down musical mediocrity.
